They say that a baby’s first kick is truly magical and meaningful. But there is more to that special feeling. Here is what we have found out for you.

A baby can swallow, stretch, kick and even cycle during his/her active time in the womb. Of course, he/she sleeps and relaxes as well.

A baby can kick, flutter, swish or roll.

A significant reduction or sudden alteration in the fetal movement is a warning sign as it has been associated with poor perinatal outcome.
4) How can your baby’s kick determine yours and your baby’s health?
Maternal perception of baby’s kick is regarded as a manifestation of fetal wellbeing.
5) Why do babies kick?
Babies kick as a result of maturation and integrity of the central nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
6) When can a mother start counting her baby’s kicks?
From 28 weeks of gestation
7) How many baby kicks is normal?
A woman should be advised to lie on her left side and to time how long it takes to feel fetal movements. Ideally, a single movement should be felt within two hours and at least ten discrete movements within 24 hours.
8) Are there any psychological impacts based on your baby’s kicks or fetal movements to predict future behavior?
No, there is no association with the child’s development after birth.
9) Do different fetal movements mean different things?
A baby can kick, flutter, swish or roll. In fact, they can perform a range of activities as they grow and mature.
10) Do some kicks signal if the baby is active or just hungry?
No, it’s just a myth.

1. Most women should be aware of baby’s kick by 20 weeks of pregnancy.
2. Women should be aware of their baby’s individual pattern of movements up to and including the onset of labour. They should report any cessation or reduction in fetal movements to their obstetrician.

1. An important piece of advice for all pregnant women who encounter a reduction in fetal movement, do not hesitate to contact your obstetrician at any time of the day. Your obstetrician will conduct a detailed examination followed by an ultrasound scan and cardiotocogram i.e. monitoring of baby’s heart rate.
