Frowning upon those pesky stretch marks? Fret not; learn how to deal with them, and get rid off your worries after knowing the causes.
Q&A
Stretch marks appear to be caused by stretching of the skin.
As the skin is stretched, there is a lack of supportive materials and the skin loses its elasticity. This leads to dermal and epidermal tearing, which in turn can produce scarring in the form of stretch marks.
It is known as striae gravidarum during pregnancy. The cause and the underlying principle is the same.
Oils and creams have been used. There is little evidence to support its effectiveness.
They form commonly on abdomen, breasts and thighs. Sometimes they appear at lower back, buttock and upper arm as well. They can be seen as early as first trimester.
Some of these striae disappear with time, while others remain as permanent discolorations of the body.
Rapid skin stretch by uterine growth and sudden weight gain during pregnancy lead to the appearance of stretch marks. Pregnancy hormones, relaxin and estrogen combined with higher levels of cortisol predispose and make the skin prime for tearing under mechanical stress.
It is not related to a woman’s health.
Various therapies such as laser treatments, glycolic acid, microdermabrasion, tretinoin and carboxytherapy have been tried postnatally. There is little evidence on the effectiveness on these methods.
